In Indore, as preparations for Deepotsav were underway, volunteers from the Mahakal organisation discovered a 10-year-old boy lying unconscious on the road near Musakhedi Square on the night of October 13. The child, identified as Ajay, was severely swollen and unable to speak. Volunteers Pt. Jayyu Joshi, Karim Pathan, and Ajay Nagda immediately took him to the government MY Hospital for urgent treatment. The hospital’s Dean, Dr. Arvind Ghanghoria, was informed of the boy’s critical condition, and Dr. Jitendra Verma, Deputy Superintendent, began treatment in the New Chest Ward (Pediatrics). Severe health condition and immediate care Upon admission, tests revealed that both of Ajay’s kidneys had failed. Several other organs were also affected, and he was in a septic condition. The situation was critical. Hospital staff, along with volunteers, immediately started dialysis and took full responsibility for his care. As his family could not be traced initially, the team focused entirely on stabilising him while continuing efforts to locate his relatives. Child could not communicate details Ajay was unable to properly communicate his mother’s name or home address due to his condition. Volunteers and hospital staff provided him with constant care and affection, encouraging him and assuring him that he would receive proper treatment. During this period, the child repeatedly cried for his mother, but could not convey any other details. The volunteers shared photos and videos of Ajay across WhatsApp groups in Indore and other cities to help locate his family. Mother left for work As Ajay’s condition improved slightly, he revealed that his father had passed away and his mother, Banno, had left him to work in catering. She often stays away for one to two months, and this time she had been gone for two and a half months. Ajay lived with his bedridden grandmother, but could not provide her details. His elder brothers lived separately and showed little concern. Volunteers continued to provide love and support, treating him like a family member while coordinating his medical care. Mother located through police assistance On the night of October 22, Azad Nagar police constable Rahul Singh saw Ajay’s photo on a WhatsApp group and informed Pt. Jayyu Joshi that the boy’s family lived in Bheel Colony. Banno was contacted and brought to the hospital along with Ajay’s maternal uncle, Vijay Damor. Seeing her child hooked to medical tubes, Banno broke down in tears. Ajay’s face lit up with a faint smile, and his eyes welled up, creating an emotional scene in the ward. Mother’s perspective Banno said she had not realised the severity of Ajay’s condition or that he had kidney disease. When she left for work, he had been fine. She could not explain why the grandmother or other family members had not searched for him during her absence. She assured that once Ajay’s health improves, she would take him home and provide full care. Ajay expressed to his mother that he did not think he would survive, reflecting both his critical condition and emotional distress. He kept looking at his mother, asking her to stay beside him, demonstrating the bond and the sense of security he sought. Dialysis and medical treatment Dr. Jitendra Verma stated that Ajay’s condition was extremely serious when he was brought to the hospital. Both kidneys had completely failed, creatinine and urea levels were dangerously high, and hemoglobin levels were low. He was immediately put on dialysis. Throughout his treatment, the volunteers and nursing staff took personal responsibility for his care, ensuring that he received round-the-clock attention. Care by volunteers and nursing staff Currently, Ajay is being closely cared for by the Mahakal organisation volunteers Pt. Jayyu Joshi, Karim Pathan, Ajay Nagda, Suresh More, Firoz Pathan, and Rinku Thakur, along with Dialysis Unit Head Nikhita Yadav and the nursing staff of Sahara Ward. They have continued to provide both medical and emotional support. Although his mother is now present at his side, the volunteers remain deeply involved in his care, praying for his speedy recovery and ensuring he receives all necessary treatment.
