A furniture maker from Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh, died after setting himself on fire during a family dispute. The incident, caught on CCTV, shows the man pouring petrol over himself and igniting it. He suffered 80% burns and died during treatment in Indore on Monday morning. The incident The incident took place on Sunday afternoon in the Shivaji Park area under Madhav Nagar police station limits. Rajendra Sharma, who worked as a furniture maker, allegedly set himself on fire after a dispute involving his wife and daughter. Badly burnt, Rajendra was first taken to Charak Hospital in Ujjain and later referred to Indore due to his critical condition. He died early Monday during treatment. Rajendra’s statement before death Before dying, Rajendra reportedly told the police that his wife Jyoti and daughter Mahi were staying with his brother-in-law Santosh Kumar, a resident of Shipra Vihar. He said that this was the reason behind his drastic step. Wife alleges he wanted to kill her Rajendra’s wife, Jyoti Sharma, told the police that he tried to kill her as well. She said, “He was running towards me while engulfed in flames.” According to Jyoti, her husband was addicted to alcohol and gambling. “He used to demand money for betting and drinking. When we refused, he would beat me and our three daughters,” she added. CCTV footage shows chilling visuals CCTV footage shows Rajendra arriving at his brother-in-law Santosh Sharma’s house to bring back his wife and daughter. He then poured petrol on himself and set himself on fire. His clothes caught fire instantly, and he began to writhe in pain. Even while burning, Rajendra ran inside Santosh’s house. See pictures- Daughter’s statement Rajendra’s daughter, Mahi, said her father had thrown her and her mother out of the house on 22 October. She said, “After that, we started staying at my uncle Santosh Sharma’s house in Shivaji Park. On Sunday, my father came to take us back. He created a scene outside the house and then set himself on fire.” Mahi also denied her father’s allegations against her husband and uncle, saying, “The accusations he made are false.” Police investigation According to CSP Deepika Shinde, Mahi informed police that her father often fought and assaulted her mother. Mahi lives separately with her husband Monty, while her mother stays with Rajendra and their two younger daughters. Brother’s allegation Rajendra’s brother, Ajay Sharma, alleged on Sunday that his brother was murdered. He claimed, “Rajendra was living with his family in Sunrise City, Nagjhiri. He had ongoing disputes with his wife Jyoti. He had also complained to Nagjhiri police earlier, but no action was taken. Today, his wife Jyoti, son-in-law Monty, and relative Santosh Sharma set him on fire.” Police action continues Police are investigating both sides’ claims — whether Rajendra’s death was self-inflicted or if others were involved. Statements from all family members are being recorded, and CCTV footage is being examined to verify the sequence of events. ​
