West Bengal is set to host a week-long Yoga Utsav ahead of International Yoga Day on June 21, with a series of programmes planned across the state under a joint initiative of the Union Ministry of Ayush and the state government. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to attend the main Yoga Day event at Kolkata’s Red Road on June 21, sources said. Bengal launches week long yoga utsav The celebrations will begin on June 14 with a special family yoga initiative. Residents will be able to participate in yoga sessions from their homes by calling a designated toll-free number. A WhatsApp video link featuring a 40-minute guided yoga session will be shared, allowing families to practise together from 6 am. Sources claim nearly four crore people across the state are expected to join the virtual programme. Families to join virtual sessions On June 19, a statewide “Run for Yoga” campaign themed “From Run to Meditation” will be organised. Local clubs and organisations will conduct 2-km runs in neighbourhoods before participants gather at designated venues for yoga sessions. A Yoga Carnival will be held on the Ganges on June 20, where yoga demonstrations will take place aboard boats. PM Modi likely to attend The week-long festival will culminate on June 21 with a grand International Yoga Day programme at Red Road in Kolkata. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to be present at the event, marking his first participation in an International Yoga Day programme in Kolkata. Officials said the Yoga Utsav aims to promote awareness about health, fitness and holistic well-being through mass public participation across West Bengal.
