Hundreds of Bangladeshi nationals, some allegedly carrying weapons, gathered along the India-Bangladesh border in Malda’s Sukhdebpur area on Saturday, triggering tension and prompting a swift response from the Border Security Force (BSF). The BSF, assisted by local police from Vaishnavnagar Police Station, foiled an alleged attempt to cross into Indian territory through the unfenced stretch of the border. Hundreds gather across border, BSF steps in Sukhdebpur, located along the India-Bangladesh border in Malda district, has witnessed several infiltration attempts since the political upheaval in Bangladesh following the resignation of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in August 2024. The area is considered vulnerable due to the absence of border fencing, making it easier for infiltrators to enter and retreat across the border. Sukdebpur remains infiltration hotspot According to residents, a large crowd had assembled on the Bangladesh side near Chapainawabganj, from where the alleged infiltration attempt originated. Residents said the BSF prevented any breach and maintained a strong presence along the border. Authorities have also restricted local villagers from approaching the border area for security reasons. Former BSF officer raises concerns Former BSF officer Samir Mitra described Sukhdebpur as a “notorious border stretch” known for fake currency and smuggling activities. He said the gathering of hundreds of people on the Bangladesh side suggested a possible organised objective and called for greater coordination between the BSF, residents, and Bangladesh border authorities. He said, “We cannot accept armed miscreants approaching the border. The BSF should seek an explanation from the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) regarding the purpose of such gatherings Government promises stronger border vigilance BJP MLA and former NSG commando Dipanjan Chakraborty said the new state government had strengthened coordination between the BSF and state police and had transferred land to facilitate border security infrastructure. While cautioning that results would not be immediate, he expressed confidence that enhanced surveillance and coordination would significantly improve border security in the coming months.
