People’s Democratic Party (PDP) chief Mehbooba Mufti has reportedly been placed under house arrest in Jammu and Kashmir, a day before Martyrs’ Day. Her daughter, Iltija Mufti, made the claim in a post on X on Sunday. However, the police and the administration have not issued any official statement. Iltija alleged that despite claims that normalcy has returned to Kashmir, opposition leaders are being detained. She also claimed that the local government is working with the police. According to her, the police in Sidhra are demolishing houses and detaining opposition members when required. July 13 is observed as Martyrs’ Day in Jammu and Kashmir. The day commemorates the 22 people who were killed in 1931 when the Dogra army opened fire outside the Central Jail in Srinagar. However, in 2020, the Lieutenant Governor’s administration removed July 13 from the list of gazetted holidays.
