The US Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has approved California-based company Reflect Orbital to send a satellite with a giant mirror into space. The company’s first experimental satellite, Arendil-1, will be equipped with a reflector mirror approximately 60 feet wide. It will remain in orbit about 640 km above Earth and, when needed, will redirect sunlight towards a specific location. The company claims that this will provide four times more light than a full moon within a radius of about 5 km.
The company plans to deploy two satellites by the end of 2026. The goal is to create a network of 36 satellites by 2027. The most ambitious plan is to deploy more than 50,000 satellites by 2035. Will help in disaster relief and rescue The company says that this artificial sunlight can be used for disaster relief, search and rescue operations, night construction work, agriculture, solar energy projects, and in remote areas. Artificial light will be available for Rs 4.7 lakh per hour Ben Novak, CEO of Reflect Orbital, says the company will charge approximately $5,000 (4.7 lakh rupees) for one hour of sunlight from a mirror if a customer contracts annually for at least 1,000 hours. Major concern – the world’s biological clock will change Many scientists have opposed this project, stating that if the darkness of night begins to disappear, human sleep, hormones, bird migration, the behavior of nocturnal creatures, seasonal cycles of plants, and even the marine food chain could be affected. ​
