T.V. Somanathan will not seek an extension and will demit office as Cabinet Secretary next month, sources indicated.

Cabinet Secretary T.V. Somanathan is set to complete his fixed two-year term in August and is unlikely to seek an extension. Known for a proactive, interventionist approach, he pushed ministries on efficiency and timely decisions instead of just coordination.

The decision is unusual as most Cabinet Secretaries take extensions. Officials say he may either want to step back after leading at the top, or take up a new assignment outside government.

During his tenure starting Aug 30, 2024, he focused on efficiency, faster decision-making, and direct intervention in ministries to address governance gaps.
