‘Conditions on FIRs against student protesters unacceptable’:CJP’s Saurav Das reacts to Supreme Court ruling

The Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) on Tuesday said it welcomed any Supreme Court order in the interest of students, but insisted that it could not replace the protesters’ demands. The party urged the Centre to first withdraw all FIRs against protesters, release those detained during the agitation, and provide a written assurance against any future retaliatory action. Speaking in Delhi, CJP Chief Spokesperson Saurav Das said the party expected the government to honour its commitments, adding that any Supreme Court directions should come “in addition” to the protesters’ demands, not as a substitute. He said the party had expected a written guarantee by Tuesday and called on the government to ensure that any assurance was clear and free of conditions. CJP warns of fresh protests, alleges government breached agreement CJP on Monday warned that it would resume its protests if police action against demonstrators does not stop and arrested students are not given relief. Saurav Das alleged that the government had violated its agreement. He claimed that hundreds of students in Bihar and West Bengal had been arrested and falsely implicated in criminal cases. Meanwhile, the Bihar government has announced that no legal action will be taken against people who participated in protests held anywhere in the state before 6:00 pm on July 26. Kapil Sibal announces ₹1 crore donation to CJP Senior advocate Kapil Sibal has announced a contribution of ₹1 crore to a fund created by the CJP. He also appealed to lawyers across the country to contribute to the fund, which has been set up to provide legal assistance to students facing criminal cases. CJP protest lasted 36 days, ended after Pradhan’s resignation On 15 May, the Chief Justice of India made the ‘cockroach’ remark about the unemployed. In response, the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) was formed on social media on 16 May. Its founder, Abhijeet Dipke, arrived in India on 6 June. From 20 June, protesters began a sit-in at Jantar Mantar over the NEET paper leak issue. The 36-day protest ended on 25 July, following the resignation of Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan. Meanwhile, Sonam Wangchuk, who had been fasting alongside students, also ended his 26-day hunger strike after receiving assurances from the government. ​
