Somanathan To Continue As Cabinet Secretary For Another Year Big Top-Level Decision: Cabinet Secretary Gets Tenure Extension By Centre Appointments Committee Clears 1-Year Extension For Cabinet Secretary Somanathan In a significant bureaucratic move, the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) has approved the extension in service of Dr. T.V. Somanathan, IAS (TN:87) as Cabinet Secretary for a further period of one year beyond 30.08.2026. According to an official order issued by the Department of Personnel and Training on 05.08.2026, the extension was cleared by the ACC. The order was signed by Ms. Manisha Saxena, Secretary, ACC & Establishment Officer and has been circulated to the Principal Secretary to PM, Secretaries to President and Vice President, Secretaries of both Houses of Parliament, all Central Government Secretaries, Chief Secretaries of all States and other senior officials. Dr. T.V. Somanathan, a 1987-batch IAS officer of the Tamil Nadu cadre, is currently serving as the top-most bureaucrat of the Government of India.
