A plane forced an emergency landing shortly after takeoff from Mashhad Airport in Iran after a tire burst mid-air. According to RT, the Boeing 737 aircraft, operated by Safran Airlines, suffered engine damage after the tire burst. The pilot then decided to bring the aircraft back to Mashhad Airport. The aircraft was travelling from Mashhad to Kermanshah. Passengers on board became extremely frightened during the incident. According to media reports, all the people on board the plane were safely evacuated and no one was reported injured. Part of the plane’s roof collapsed during landing The government of Iran’s Razavi Khorasan province reported the incident at 5:39 p.m. local time. Iranian news agency Akhirin Khabar released a video of the incident. The video shows a section of the plane’s inner roof breaking off during landing and falling on passengers. However, no injuries were reported in the incident. Safran Airlines spokesman Hassan Jafari told the state-run Fars news agency that all passengers safely exited the plane and were then sent to Kermanshah on another flight. The airport runway was closed for some time after the accident, but it was later reopened. How dangerous is a plane tyre burst? A tire burst doesn’t automatically cause an aircraft to crash. The actual risk depends on when the tire burst, whether the plane was taking off or landing, how many tires were affected, and whether the burst damaged any other parts, such as the engine or landing gear. Pieces of tire can also damage other parts of the aircraft. That’s why pilots immediately implement emergency procedures in such situations, landing the plane back at the airport if necessary. In the latest incident in Mashhad, initial reports indicate that the tire burst damaged the plane’s engine, and the plane was brought back to Mashhad. Old cases of aircraft tyre bursts… Aircraft tyre bursts have caused serious situations many times before, but not every tyre burst results in a plane crash. August 2026 – United States – A Boeing 737 cargo plane’s brakes lock up during landing in Los Angeles, USA, causing all four tires to burst and a fire to ignite underneath the plane. The plane stopped on the runway, and there were no major injuries. May 2024 – Türkiye – The front tire of a Corendon Airlines Boeing 737 exploded during landing at Gazipasa Airport in Türkiye. The aircraft’s landing gear was also damaged, and the plane stopped on the runway. There were 184 passengers and six crew members on board, and all were safely evacuated.
