Watch two images of the incident… Key points about India’s hit-and-run law… Hit-and-run law: When a driver flees the scene after a road accident, it is called a hit-and-run. The punishment depends on the outcome and circumstances of the accident. In case of death: Under Section 106(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), causing death through negligence can lead to five years in prison and a fine. Provision for a 10-year sentence: Section 106(2) provides for 10 years in prison and a fine for fleeing without informing the police or magistrate after a death, but this section is not currently in force. In case of injury: If there is no death, other legal provisions may also be invoked depending on the severity of the injuries and the facts of the incident. What to do after an accident: Stop the vehicle, ensure that the injured person receives help safely and inform the police. Follow the legal process instead of fleeing the scene.
