Senior Congress leader and Rajya Sabha MP Digvijaya Singh on Friday raised strong objections to the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voter lists being conducted across the country, questioning the move’s constitutional validity and alleging political bias in its implementation. Speaking to media, Singh said a ‘fundamental question’ arises from the exercise, that citizens are being asked to prove their nationality, which, he argued, does not fall under the Election Commission’s constitutional mandate. It is the responsibility of the Election Commission to ensure that every citizen is enrolled in the voter list. Demanding proof of citizenship is not within their powers. This process is purely aimed at dividing people in the name of citizenship. Singh said. ‘BJP using BLOs for political gain’ The Congress MP alleged that during the ongoing revision, Booth-Level Officers (BLOs) were removing the names of genuine voters without any valid complaints. Why are names of those who have voted three or four times being deleted from the rolls? In double-engine governments, BLOs are working like BJP party workers. Singh claimed. He added that in states where the BJP has ruled for over a decade, the party has not raised objections to any voter names. Yet now, everything is being given a Hindu-Muslim narrative for political mileage. he said. ‘Proofs of Citizenship’ a tool for division Calling the SIR a ‘politically motivated exercise,’ Singh alleged that the BJP is using administrative machinery to question the citizenship of ordinary Indians. This is a direct violation of citizens’ constitutional rights. he remarked. ‘BJP dividing cities and communities’ Referring to recent media reports about alleged communal tensions in Sagar city, Singh accused the BJP of deepening divisions. Jinnah and Savarkar divided the country in 1947, and now the BJP is dividing every city and every neighbourhood. he said.
