Starting today, OpenAI has made its ‘ChatGPT Go’ subscription free for users in India for an entire year. The plan, which previously cost ₹399 per month, now brings an annual saving of ₹4,788. With this plan, users get access to additional features such as faster responses, higher usage limits, file uploads, and image generation starting today. 1. Since the launch of ChatGPT Go, paid subscriptions in India have more than doubled. This free offer is to engage more users and bring AI beyond metro cities. It matches the company’s ‘India-first’ approach and the India AI Mission. The company has announced to make it free in response to the free plans of Google and Perplexity. Google had made its AI Pro membership (₹19,500 annually) free for students for one year. Meanwhile, Perplexity has also started offering its premium plan for free in collaboration with Airtel. 5. What are the benefits for users? OpenAI says this offer is a big step towards democratising AI in India. India is already the second largest market for ChatGPT, and this offer will accelerate its growth even further. ChatGPT Go free but with a condition To claim the free 12-month ChatGPT Go plan, users will likely need to add a payment method, such as a credit/debit card or UPI, during sign-up or while upgrading. This requirement is important because it helps OpenAI verify your account and also enables automatic billing once the free year ends, if you don’t cancel. What’s the catch To activate the free Go subscription, you’ll need to select the plan in your ChatGPT account’s upgrade section and enter a payment method. Since OpenAI now supports both card and UPI payments in India, either option works. If you continue after the free year without cancelling, the subscription will automatically shift to paid billing.
