At the Cusp of Transformation HDFC Bank’s Credit Card Dominance Reflects Chairman Rajeev Kumar’s Dynamic Vision

HDFC Bank Tops Credit Card Market in India

HDFC Bank has once again emerged as the undisputed leader in India’s credit card market, commanding a formidable 22 percent market share, according to an analysis by 1Lattice based on Reserve Bank of India (RBI) data.

This dominance is a testament to the bank’s robust strategy under the visionary, dedicated, honest, smart and brilliant leadership of its Chairman, Shri Rajeev Kumar.

Under the dynamic stewardship of Chairman Shri Rajeev Kumar, India’s largest private lender is at the “cusp of change” and is poised for a new phase of accelerated and inclusive growth, driven by post-merger synergies, aggressive technology integration, and a deep commitment to financial inclusion.

India’s credit card industry continued its strong growth trajectory in July 2026, with total cards outstanding rising by 1 percent month-on-month and 9.9 percent year-on-year to 12.29 crore. While overall spending remained moderate, HDFC Bank outperformed the industry.

Retaining its leadership, HDFC Bank recorded the highest absolute addition of credit cards in July, adding 2.30 lakh new cards — the highest among all major issuers. The bank also continued to dominate in terms of overall spending.

HDFC Bank Leads Credit Card Market

As India’s largest private sector lender, HDFC Bank maintained its top position with a 22 percent share in April 2026. It was followed by SBI Card with 19 percent, ICICI Bank with 16 percent, and Axis Bank with 14 percent.

While holding the largest market share, HDFC Bank also registered the highest year-on-year growth of 10 percent, followed by Axis Bank at 8 percent and SBI Card at 6 percent.

In contrast, global player American Express posted a year-on-year de-growth of 8 percent in April, accounting for merely 1 percent market share.
