INDIA’S FIRSTS: Jaya Varma Sinha Breaks Century-Old Glass Ceiling in Railways From Psychology to Railway History: Meet India’s First Woman Railway Board Chief “Skill Sets Are Gender Agnostic” — Story of Jaya Varma Sinha, First Woman CEO of Railway Board JAYA VARMA SINHA CREATES HISTORY AS FIRST WOMAN CHAIRPERSON & CEO OF RAILWAY BOARD For more than a century, the Railway Board never had a woman at its helm. In 2023, Jaya Varma Sinha changed history. She became the first woman ever to lead the Railway Board as its Chairperson and CEO, taking charge of one of the world’s largest railway networks. Interestingly, the Railways were never part of her initial plan. She wanted to study Physics, but after missing the cut-off, she pursued Psychology at Allahabad University. She then cracked the Civil Services examination and joined the Indian Railway Traffic Service (IRTS) in 1988. Over the next 35 years, she built a formidable career across Operations, Commercial, IT and Vigilance. She scripted history as the first woman Principal Chief Operations Manager of South Eastern Railway and later served as Railway Adviser at the Indian High Commission in Dhaka, where the iconic Maitree Express between Kolkata and Dhaka began operations during her tenure. As Member, Operations and Business Development, she handled the entire gamut of passenger and freight operations of Indian Railways. She came into national spotlight after the tragic Balasore train accident in 2023, when her clear and composed explanation of the complex signalling system helped the nation understand the technical reasons behind the tragedy that claimed nearly 300 lives. Later, her responsibilities included railway modernisation and the rollout of Vande Bharat trains. For Sinha, reaching the top was not just a personal milestone, but an opportunity to inspire. As she told _The Week_, “Skill sets, dedication and competence are gender agnostic.” And her message to the next generation is powerful in its simplicity: “So let there be no barriers remaining in the mind.” Post navigation “Birthday Special For An Accolade To The Great Son Of India, Commissioner UAD Mr. Sanket Shantaram Bhondve”
