Consumers across the country will soon get cheaper CNG and domestic piped natural gas (PNG). The Petroleum and Natural Gas Regulatory Board (PNGRB) has announced reduction and simplification of method of calculation of gas transportation charges, which will be effective from January 1, 2026. PNGRB member AK Tiwari said that with the new unified tariff structure, consumers in different states will save ₹2-3 per unit, depending on the state and taxes. 2 zones instead of three in new tariff structure PNGRB member A.K. Tiwari said in an exclusive interview that in the system implemented in 2023, the tariff was divided into 3 zones based on distance. In this, a charge of ₹42 applies for 0 to 200 km. While ₹80 is charged for 300 km to 1,200 km and ₹107 for more than 1,200 km. Now this system has been simplified to two zones. Tiwari said, the first zone will be uniformly applicable across the country for CNG and domestic PNG consumers. This will reduce transport costs, which will directly reach the consumer. How is CNG and PNG measured? Benefit to Consumers in 312 Geographical Areas This change will benefit 312 geographical areas where 40 City Gas Distribution (CGD) companies are operating. Tiwari said, this benefit will reach both CNG vehicle users and households using PNG in their kitchens. PNGRB has clearly told gas distribution companies that these savings should reach consumers. The regulator will monitor compliance. Tiwari said our role is to balance the interests of consumers and operators. CGD Sector Expansion Speaking about the expansion of CNG and PNG networks, Tiwari said that licenses have been issued to cover the entire country, which include public sector companies, private companies and joint ventures. PNGRB is working to reduce VAT and simplify processes in many states. He said that the regulator is not just a monitoring body, but also playing the role of a facilitator in this sector.
