Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee is holding a day-long sit-in protest in Central Kolkata on Tuesday. The protest is against the attack on her nephew and MP Abhishek Banerjee, post-election violence, and the eviction of hawkers. The venue was changed at the last minute after permission was not granted by Kolkata Police. Following the refusal for a protest at Rani Rashmoni Road, Mamata moved to the Y-channel bus stop in Esplanade (Dharmatala) to continue the demonstration. Kalyan Banerjee, Dola Sen and Kunal Ghosh are also accompanying her. Before beginning the protest, Banerjee paid tribute at the statue of Dr B.R. Ambedkar on Red Road and was seen holding a copy of the Constitution of India. Addressing the crowd through a megaphone, Banerjee said they were not allowed to set up a stage or use microphones, adding: “But I will fight or die.” Earlier, Mamata had warned that if she was prevented from protesting in Kolkata, the party would shift its agitation to New Delhi.
