A complaint seeking registration of an FIR against former West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has been lodged at the Cyber Police Station in Siliguri, alleging that her recent public remarks were provocative and detrimental to India’s sovereignty, public order, and diplomatic relations. Advocate cites provocative public remarks According to a copy of the complaint submitted on June 3 by advocate Rinku Chatterjee Singh of the Calcutta High Court’s Jalpaiguri Circuit Bench, Banerjee has been accused of making “provocative and inflammatory statements” against constitutional institutions, including the Election Commission of India and central forces deployed during elections. Remarks linked to Bangladesh controversy The complaint specifically refers to remarks allegedly made by Banerjee at a political programme at Rani Rashmoni Smarane on June 2. The complainant alleged that Banerjee claimed to have had confidential discussions with the Union Ministry of Home Affairs and made statements linking the Government of India and the Union Home Minister to the killing of a political leader in neighbouring Bangladesh. According to the complaint, such remarks could undermine the credibility of the Union government, create hostility between India and Bangladesh, and adversely affect diplomatic relations between the two countries. Alleged impact on bilateral relations The complainant further alleged that the statements had the potential to incite public disorder, communal unrest, hatred and disharmony among different communities. The complaint claims that the remarks could affect national integrity, sovereignty, and public tranquillity. The petition urges police to register an FIR and initiate an impartial investigation. It cites multiple provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including Sections 152, 153, 153A, 191, 192, 196, 351, 352 and 353. Police diary entry officially recorded A General Diary entry acknowledging receipt of the complaint was made at the Siliguri Cyber Crime Police Station on June 3, according to the documents. No FIR registration had been confirmed at the time of reporting. There was also no immediate response from Mamata Banerjee or the Trinamool Congress regarding the allegations mentioned in the complaint.
