A self-styled godman who allegedly claimed to be an incarnation of God has been arrested in Maharashtra’s Pune for allegedly raping and torturing a woman for nearly 15 years. The accused, identified as 59-year-old Radhamohan Mishra from Haryana, ran an ashram from a bungalow in Pune and allegedly attracted followers by promising solutions to family disputes, health issues and financial problems. According to police, Mishra gained the trust of a 41-year-old woman from Haryana and her family by claiming to possess divine powers. The woman has alleged that the godman sexually assaulted her for years while subjecting her to severe mental and physical abuse. The victim told investigators that she was repeatedly given electric shocks, forced to drink urine and kept under constant psychological pressure. Police said Mishra gradually isolated the woman from her family, spread misinformation about her among relatives and pressured her to separate from her husband. Investigators further alleged that the accused was attempting to take control of the woman’s property and transfer assets into his own name. CCTV surveillance, blackmail allegations According to police, the woman was made to live inside the ashram, where CCTV cameras had been installed in her room to monitor her activities. The accused allegedly obtained private videos of the woman and her husband and used them to blackmail her. After years of alleged abuse, the woman reportedly broke the CCTV cameras installed in her room and escaped from the ashram. She later informed her family about the alleged ordeal, following which a police complaint was filed. ‘Modern Gurukul’ used to recruit followers Police investigations revealed that Mishra operated what he described as a “modern gurukul” and claimed to possess supernatural powers, including the ability to predict the future. He allegedly persuaded families to send their children to stay at the ashram. Authorities suspect that other residents, including children, may also have been subjected to abuse and are investigating further. Cash, electronic devices seized During raids at the ashram, police recovered 12 laptops, 19 hard disks, a tablet, 11 mobile phones, 23 pen drives, several DVDs and CDs, cash worth around ₹6.5 lakh, and gold and silver jewellery valued at approximately ₹15 lakh. Some medicines were also seized and are being examined. Police said the accused was constructing an underground tunnel that could have been used as an escape route from the premises. Mishra’s followers are reportedly spread across Maharashtra and several northern Indian states. Religious gatherings were organised at the ashram every Thursday and attended by large numbers of devotees. 8 arrested, probe underway Police have arrested eight people, including Mishra, in connection with the case. All the accused have been remanded to police custody until June 20. A case has been registered under charges including rape, criminal conspiracy, cheating, and provisions of the Maharashtra Anti-Superstition and Black Magic Act. Investigators are currently examining the seized electronic devices and probing the wider network linked to the accused and the ashram.
