Getting a passport in India will become more expensive from July 1. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has revised passport fees across different categories after amending the Passport Rules, 1980, and has issued a gazette notification announcing the new rates. According to the notification, applicants will have to pay ₹1,000 more for a standard 36-page passport. The fee has been increased from ₹1,500 to ₹2,500. The Tatkal service fee has also been raised from ₹3,500 to ₹5,000. Tatkal processing to cost up to ₹6,000 Frequent travellers opting for a 60-page passport booklet will have to pay ₹3,500 under the normal category and ₹6,000 under the Tatkal category. Revised passport fees Higher charges for lost or damaged passports The steepest increase applies to replacement passports issued after loss or damage. For a lost or damaged 36-page passport, applicants will now have to pay ₹5,000 under normal processing and ₹7,500 under Tatkal processing. For a 60-page replacement passport, the fee has been fixed at ₹6,000 under the normal category and ₹8,500 under Tatkal. Separate rules for replacement passports of minors If a 36-page passport issued to a minor is lost or damaged, the replacement fee will be ₹4,250 under the normal category. Parents opting for Tatkal service to replace a lost passport of a child will have to pay ₹6,750. No change in passport validity The government has clarified that passport validity rules remain unchanged. Passports issued to adults will continue to be valid for up to 10 years. For minors, passports will remain valid for five years or until they turn 18, whichever is earlier. No changes have been made to these provisions. ​
