A 30-year-old man was killed in a car explosion on a national highway in Karnataka’s Tumakuru district on Saturday, with police suspecting that an explosive device, possibly a country-made bomb, triggered the blast. Authorities said the exact cause of the explosion and the type of explosive used will be confirmed only after the forensic examination is completed. The deceased has been identified as Nagendra, while a 23-year-old woman, Ramya Ullal, sustained injuries in the incident. According to police, Nagendra had booked a car from Siddapura in Bengaluru’s Jayanagar area and picked up Ramya before travelling towards Tumakuru. The incident took place near Kallambella in Sira taluk. Police said the car driver told investigators that an argument broke out between Nagendra and Ramya during the journey. During the altercation, Nagendra allegedly attacked Ramya with a knife. Despite being injured, she managed to jump out of the moving vehicle. Ramya also alerted the driver that Nagendra was carrying a bomb. The driver immediately stopped the car by the roadside and got out. Moments later, a powerful explosion engulfed the vehicle. The driver also sustained injuries in the incident. Police said Nagendra had locked himself inside the car before the explosion occurred. Tumakuru Superintendent of Police Ashok KV said police rushed to the spot after receiving information about a car on fire along the highway. When officers arrived, the driver and Ramya were found outside the vehicle, while the car was completely engulfed in flames. During preliminary questioning, both the driver and the injured woman told police that Nagendra had used an explosive inside the vehicle, leading to the blast. Police and forensic teams have examined the scene and collected evidence. Officials said the investigation is underway, and the exact sequence of events, as well as the nature of the explosive used, will be established after the forensic report is received.
