Over two years after the Reserve Bank of India announced the withdrawal of Rs 2000 banknotes, Rs 5,956 crore worth of these notes remain in circulation. Initially valued at Rs 3.56 lakh crore, 98.33% of the notes have been returned since May 19, 2023.
