Rahul Gandhi visits Delhi slums near Yamuna:LoP questions SDM over deletion of all voter names in area from SIR list; 47 lakh names removed so far

Rahul Gandhi visited the Bela Estate slum settlement along the Yamuna in Delhi on Monday. Rahul shared a video of the visit on X, saying that 728 people live there. After the SIR, only one name remained on the voter list, while the other 727 names were deleted. Rahul said these people have been living there for decades. They voted in the 2024 Lok Sabha election and the 2025 Delhi Assembly election. Their homes were demolished in 2023, but they did not leave the area and are still living there. While sitting among the residents, Rahul called the Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM). He asked whether having a house or not had any connection with the right to vote. Rahul claimed that Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar himself had said that ‘House Number 0’ is meant for homeless people. He then questioned why the names of 727 people had been deleted. Delhi previously had 1.45 crore voters. This means around 47.5 lakh names did not appear on the list. More than 33 lakh voters have been issued notices over discrepancies in their Enumeration Forms. In several cases, their data could not be matched with the voter list prepared during the previous SIR conducted in 2002. Final Delhi voter list to be published on December 4 The Delhi Election Commission said on Monday that Booth-Level Officers will visit the homes of voters who have been issued notices over discrepancies in the voter list and collect their documents. The exercise is being carried out as part of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the voter list. On September 25, the Election Commission extended the deadline for filing claims and objections under the ongoing SIR in Delhi by one month to October 30. The final voter list will now be published on December 4. Those missing from SIR can apply to have their names added Following a meeting on September 26, the Election Commission said people whose names were left out of the SIR can apply to the concerned Electoral Registration Officer (ERO) to have their names added as part of the ongoing voter list updation process. This also includes young people and first-time voters. The Commission has directed Chief Electoral Officers (CEOs), District Election Officers (DEOs) and EROs to conduct special drives to add the names of such people. So far, 13.37 crore names have been removed from the draft voter lists of 30 states and Union Territories during the SIR. According to the Election Commission, the country has more than 96.88 crore voters in total, meaning around 14.1% of voters have had their names removed during the SIR. SIR completed in 10 states and 3 Union Territories The first and second phases of the SIR have covered 10 states and three Union Territories. After the SIR, the BJP won the Assembly elections in Bihar, West Bengal, Puducherry and Assam. The Congress alliance won in Kerala, while TVK won in Tamil Nadu. A Special Revision (SR) was conducted in Assam. The BJP government returned to power there as well. Third phase- SIR in 16 states, including Delhi and Maharashtra On May 14, the Election Commission announced the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) in 16 states and three Union Territories, including Haryana, Jharkhand, Uttarakhand, Delhi and Maharashtra. This is the third phase of the SIR. The entire process will run from May 30 to December 23. During this period, 36.73 crore voters are being verified. Among the states covered by the SIR, Punjab, Uttarakhand and Manipur will hold Assembly elections next year. The other 13 states will go to the polls in 2028 and 2029. ​
