Union Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari said on Wednesday that his dream is to make India’s auto sector the world’s No. 1. He said India is currently in third place, after the United States and China. Gadkari made the remarks at the first HT Auto Leaderboard Awards of 2026. He said India’s auto sector contributes more than ₹22.75 lakh crore to the economy. Focus on clean technology and electric vehicles Gadkari reiterated the government’s focus on cleaner powertrains and fuel technology. He said electric vehicles are becoming a major segment of India’s auto industry as consumer preferences change. Sales of electric passenger vehicles and electric two-wheelers recorded a sharp increase in FY26. He described this as a sign of customers’ positive response to battery-powered electric vehicles. Gadkari urged the auto industry to explore ways to reduce the prices of electric vehicles.
