Bhopal will see a major protest on Monday against smart meters. Consumers from across Madhya Pradesh will gather at Shahjahani Park after 12:30 PM. The protest is organized by the Madhya Pradesh Electricity Consumers Association (MECA). Participants will present 11 demands to the government, including 200 units of free electricity and lower electricity rates. Rachna Agrawal and Lokesh Sharma, state conveners of the association, said that electricity consumers across Madhya Pradesh and the country are opposing pre-paid smart meters. This opposition is not a formality or a political protest based on vested interests, but is linked to our daily income and the question of life and death. Recently, its ill effects have also come to light. Mudit Bhatnagar of the organization said that smart meters have been installed in many areas of Bhopal. Through which the poor are being harassed. Officials of the organization stated that the problem of excessively increased electricity bills due to smart meters is present in all districts of Madhya Pradesh. In Bhopal itself, consumers reported that despite paying their bill every month, one consumer’s bill came to 10 thousand, another’s 20 thousand, and a third’s 29 thousand rupees. In Gwalior, consumers with one-room houses are receiving bills up to 5 thousand rupees. 3 consumers from Gwalior reported that they received bills twice a month. Both bills are for 6 thousand each. In districts like Guna, Sehore, Vidisha, Satna, Indore, Dewas, Damoh, Jabalpur, etc., common consumers who used to receive electricity bills of 700-800 are now getting them in thousands. In Guna, a farmer was given an electricity bill of more than 2 lakh. In all districts where smart meters have been installed, consumers are suffering from electricity bills. People are paying bills by selling their jewelry and utensils. Reason for protest These are the demands from the government ​
