Vedic Clock Gifted by MP Has Drawn Praise as PM Modi Observes Vikramaditya Vedic Clock at Kashi Vishwanath Temple Premises

The world’s first Vikramaditya Vedic Clock, dedicated to Baba Vishwanath, was observed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi after its installation in the Kashi Vishwanath Temple courtyard.

Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Dr. Mohan Yadav presented the clock to Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Pratipada, Vaisakh Krishna Paksha, Vikram Samvat 2083 — April 3, 2026. It was ceremonially installed in the temple complex on Dwitiya — April 4, 2026 — with full religious rituals.

From Ujjain to Kashi: Reviving Ancient Timekeeping

Following the establishment of the Vikramaditya Vedic Clock in Ujjain, the centre of Kaal Ganana, the initiative is part of a series to install Vedic clocks at Jyotirlingas across India. As per CM Yadav’s intent, the clock was first offered to Baba Vishwanath.

The clock, developed by Maharaja Vikramaditya Shodhpeeth, Ujjain under MP’s Culture Department, was inaugurated by PM Modi on February 29, 2024. Weighing 700 kg, the 10-foot digital installation blends tradition with technology.

How the Vikramaditya Vedic Clock Works

Unlike the 24-hour Gregorian system, the Vedic clock calculates time from one sunrise to the next, dividing the day into 30 muhurtas.

• Sunrise to sunset = 15 muhurtas
• Sunset to next sunrise = 15 muhurtas
• 1 muhurta = 30 kalas = approx. 48 minutes
• 1 kala = 30 kashthas = 96 seconds.

The clock operates on location-specific sunrise and displays Vedic time, Indian Standard Time, IST, GMT, tithi, nakshatra, Vikram Samvat month, planetary positions, Bhadra, moon phase, and weather.

Preserving India’s Scientific Heritage

Dr. Shri Ram Tiwari, Culture Advisor to MP CM, said India gave the world a unique system of timekeeping based on the sun and nature. “Under PM Modi’s guidance and CM Mohan Yadav’s leadership, MP is striving to preserve its glorious past. The Vedic clock is an important step to keep our historical memories alive,” he said.

Temple CEO Vishwa Bhushan Mishra added that visitors will gain insight into India’s ancient and scientific system of time calculation.

Plans are in place to install Vedic clocks at all Jyotirlingas and Ram Temple, Ayodhya.
