A fresh controversy surfaced in Kolkata on Sunday after officers from Kolkata Police visited the residence of Abhishek Banerjee amid the ongoing illegal construction row linked to properties associated with the Trinamool Congress leader. The Kolkata Municipal Corporation has meanwhile extended by 10 days the deadline mentioned in notices related to the alleged illegal portions of multiple properties linked to Banerjee, including his residence ‘Shantiniketan’ on Harish Chatterjee Road. The original deadline was scheduled to end on Monday. Sources said Banerjee wrote to the civic body on Sunday seeking additional time to respond to the notices, following which the extension was granted. Police team visits ‘Shantiniketan’ residence According to sources, several senior police officers from Lalbazar reached the ‘Shantiniketan’ residence in Kalighat around 4 pm. Three officers reportedly entered the premises and remained inside for some time before leaving with a large LED monitor loaded into a police vehicle, triggering speculation. Police officials, however, did not comment on the purpose of the visit. Police officers, however, did not comment while leaving the residence. 17 properties under scrutiny KMC had earlier issued notices to multiple addresses linked to Banerjee on Kalighat Road and Harish Mukherjee Road, seeking clarification on whether proper permissions had been taken for alleged additional construction and structural modifications. Sources also claimed that notices under Section 400(1) were issued regarding a property housing ‘Abhishek Hardware’, allegedly linked to Banerjee’s family. Civic authorities are reportedly examining nearly 17 properties connected to the controversy.
