AJUP chief Humayun Kabir has offered former West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee the opportunity to contest the upcoming by-election from the Rejinagar Assembly constituency in Murshidabad, saying she should remain active in parliamentary politics despite the Trinamool Congress’s current setbacks. Former ally backs Mamata’s comeback Kabir, once considered a close associate of Banerjee, claimed that the TMC is no longer in a strong position in the state and alleged that some leaders had betrayed the former chief minister. He said Banerjee should continue her political journey and invited her to contest from Rejinagar. Rejinagar seat offered for bypoll contest The AJUP leader further stated that if Banerjee expressed interest, he would be willing to vacate the seat for her. He noted that the constituency had earlier been earmarked for his son but said he was prepared to offer it to Banerjee. Kabir also blamed TMC national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee for the party’s current condition. Humayun recalls split from TMC A former TMC leader, Kabir parted ways with the party ahead of the West Bengal Assembly elections and floated the Aam Janata Unnayan Party (AJUP). He contested from both Rejinagar and Naoda constituencies and won both seats. Political turmoil grips post poll Bengal The remarks come a month after the change of government in West Bengal. Since the Assembly election results were declared on May 4, political turmoil and internal divisions within TMC have intensified. The party secured 80 seats, while the BJP won 207 seats and formed its first government in the state under Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari.
