“I had only one child. He was my precious son. No one in the family had studied. How can I forget him? Someone bring my son back…” This is what the mother of Abhishek Nishad, who lost his life in a Russian attack on Ukraine’s Odesa port, says. Abhishek, a resident of Deoria, was the only son of his parents. He died on 19 July. Since her son’s death, the mother has been inconsolable. To every person who comes home, the mother says the same thing, ‘someone bring my son back’. Then she faints from crying. Abhishek’s father comforts his wife with one hand, and wipes his own tears with the other. The elder sister lies in a daze, not speaking even when spoken to. When the younger sister is asked about her brother, she bursts into tears. She says, “I had only one brother. Now on whose wrist will I tie a Rakhi?” Abhishek was a seaman on Turkey’s ‘Golden Leo’ ship. The ship was carrying goods from Ukraine to Syria. On 19 July (Sunday), Abhishek died. On Monday, the shipping company’s agent called and informed the family about Abhishek’s death. His family includes his wife Anita Devi (45), son Abhishek Nishad (22), and two daughters Sadhana (26) and Aradhana (20). Kaushal is a farmer and also the booth president of the BJP. His elder daughter Aradhana is pursuing her MA, and the younger daughter is studying for her BA. Abhishek completed his intermediate education from Ram Prakash Mal Inter College in 2022. He wanted to join the Merchant Navy. Despite the family’s poor financial condition, Kaushal fulfilled his son’s dream. For this, he took a loan of ₹5,50,000. Then he sent his son for training at an institute in Lucknow. Kaushal hoped that if his son went abroad, the family’s situation would improve. Reached Turkey with the dream of his sisters’ marriage After completing his training, Abhishek went to Mumbai. Before leaving home, he had told his father, “Dad, now start preparing for elder sister Sadhana’s wedding. I will get my sister married into a good family. I will also build a house.” From Mumbai, he reached Turkey. In Turkey, he started working as a seaman on a ship named ‘Golden Leo’. He was set to receive a salary of $300 (₹28,752) every month. Food and accommodation were arranged on the ship itself. Father fainted upon hearing the news of his son’s death On the night of 19 July (Sunday), Russia attacked Ukraine’s Odesa port. Abhishek also died in this attack. On Monday, the shipping company’s agent called Abhishek’s father to inform him of his death. Upon hearing this, Abhishek’s father, Kaushal, fainted. As soon as his mother and sisters learned of their son’s death, they started crying loudly. Friends said they can’t believe Abhishek is no more Abhishek’s friend Nitish told Dainik Bhaskar, “I still can’t believe that my friend is no longer in this world. He was sociable and hardworking. He was very happy after getting a job abroad. He video-called me. He was showing that there was a bombing happening there. He said, ‘Brother, I am very scared.’” Abhishek’s other friends also became emotional remembering the days spent with him. Meanwhile, as soon as information about the incident was received, the district administration contacted Abhishek’s family. The process of bringing Abhishek’s body to India through the Indian Embassy and the shipping company has been initiated. The administration states that all possible assistance will be provided to the family so that the body can reach the village soon. ​
