With the changing environment, new opportunities in tourism, eco-tourism, rural tourism and local entrepreneurship are taking shape in Bastar.

The biggest specialty of Bastar is the unique confluence of nature and culture. Destinations like Chitrakote and Tirathgarh waterfalls, Kanger Valley National Park, Kutumsar and Kailash caves, Maa Danteshwari Temple, Dalpat Sagar and Bastar Palace offer tourists a unique experience of nature, adventure, spirituality and history. A tourist visiting here does not just see sightseeing spots, but also connects with local life, traditional cuisine, handicrafts, folk dance and music. This is why Bastar is being developed not just as a tourist destination, but as a distinct region for experience-based tourism.

Connectivity Opening New Paths of Development

Better connectivity is the key foundation for tourism expansion. Efforts to strengthen road, rail and air connectivity in Bastar are giving new momentum to tourism prospects. The ‘Bastar 2.0’ blueprint proposing 228 new roads and 267 bridges is a significant initiative towards increasing access to remote areas.

Maa Danteshwari Airport in Jagdalpur is playing a crucial role in connecting Bastar with other parts of the country. Currently, air connectivity is available to Raipur and Hyderabad. Projects like the Rowghat-Jagdalpur rail line hold the potential to further strengthen regional connectivity in the future. Better connectivity will benefit not only tourists, but will also give local products access to markets, better links to rural areas, and new tourism-based employment opportunities for youth.

Benefits of Tourism to Reach Villages Through Homestays

Rural and tribal homestays have become a vital link in Bastar’s tourism development. Through the Chhattisgarh Homestay Policy 2025-30, efforts are being made to give tourists an experience of rural life, tribal culture, local art, handicrafts and traditional cuisine by staying with local families.

The biggest specialty of homestays is that the economic benefit of tourism reaches directly to local families. Along with tourists’ stay, opportunities for income are being created for other nearby families through food, local guides, transport, handicrafts and cultural activities.

Under the policy, there is a provision of Rs 1 lakh per room for construction of a new room and Rs 50,000 per room for renovation of an existing room. With assistance ranging from a minimum of one to a maximum of nine rooms, rural families can connect with tourism activities as per their capacity. Currently, proposals for 85 beneficiaries have been sent to banks for subsidy and 27 homestays are already registered with the Chhattisgarh Tourism Board.

Culture Becomes the Biggest Strength of Tourism

Bastar’s tribal culture is among its biggest specialties. Bell metal and metal craft, wood and bamboo art, traditional jewellery, dance, music and cuisine are centres of attraction for tourists from across the country and world. Events like Bastar Pandum are giving this cultural heritage a wider platform. In Bastar Pandum 2026, 12 genres of tribal culture were showcased and around 55,000 tribal people participated. The event held in the presence of President Smt. Droupadi Murmu provided an opportunity to bring Bastar’s cultural identity to the national stage.

Diverse Tourism Potential from Faith to Adventure

Bastar has religious, cultural, eco and adventure tourism potential all in one place. Maa Danteshwari Temple and Bastar Dussehra provide a base for spiritual and cultural tourism, while areas like Kanger Valley and Dhudmaras present new opportunities for nature and adventure-based tourism.

Plans for facilities like adventure tourism, glass bridge and canopy walk in Dhudmaras and the village’s selection for the UN Tourism Best Tourism Village Development Programme are giving new identity to rural tourism potential.

Employment and Local Prosperity Through Tourism

The most important aspect of Bastar’s tourism development is that its benefits reach the local community. Homestay operators, tourist guides, local drivers, food service providers, handicraft sellers, cultural artists and youth associated with adventure tourism are becoming part of this new tourism economy.

Under Bastar’s tourism roadmap, 45 youth have been trained in tourism management. This indicates that work is being done to link tourism not just to the development of sightseeing spots but also to local skills, employment and entrepreneurship.

Bastar’s tourism is one such model in which nature remains protected, the originality of tribal culture is maintained, and the income generated from tourism reaches the local community. Roads are connecting Bastar, air connectivity is reducing distances, possibilities of rail connectivity are expanding, homestays are linking villages to the tourism economy, and events like Bastar Pandum are bringing its cultural identity to the fore.
