US President Donald Trump announced an energy ceasefire in the Russia-Ukraine war, saying both sides had agreed to it with immediate effect. He urged both parties not to violate the agreement. In this deal, both countries will stop attacking energy facilities. However, Trump did not specify how long the ceasefire would remain in effect. Russia and Ukraine have also not officially confirmed the agreement or disclosed its terms. This comes in the wake of Trump’s energy deal with Russia, in which Washington will import of millions of tons of Russian diesel to ease domestic fuel prices ahead of the midterm elections in November. In a post on Truth Social, Donald Trump said, “ Russia will immediately supply over 3,00,000 Tons of Diesel Fuel to the American and Global Marketplace, another 5,00,000 Tons during the month of November, and 10,00,000 Tons immediately thereafter. Additionally, based on the condition of their Diesel Refineries, Russia will then deliver, within a short period of time, 30,00,000 Tons of Diesel Fuel.” Trump unhappy with attacks on Russian oil refineries Trump has expressed displeasure over Ukraine’s attacks on Russian oil refineries. On Saturday, he criticised the strikes, saying they could worsen fuel shortages around the world. Ukraine has been targeting Russia’s oil-related facilities, damaging its oil revenues and its ability to supply fuel to its military. Russia launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. The war between the two countries has continued since then. Zelenskyy had said Ukraine would stop attacks if Russia halted its strikes Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy had said that if Russia stopped attacking Ukraine’s energy facilities, Ukraine would also be ready to halt attacks on Russian oil refineries. In a post on social media platform X on Sunday, he said both countries would have to take steps together to reduce tensions and that firm security guarantees were also necessary. Zelenskyy made the statement after Trump called on Ukraine to stop attacking Russian refineries. Zelenskyy calls for 2-month ceasefire to hold elections Zelenskyy has said that if Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin want elections in Ukraine, Russia must halt the war for 60 days. He said Ukraine would be ready to hold elections if a complete ceasefire remained in effect during this period. In an interview with ABC News on October 11, Zelenskyy said the people of Ukraine would decide who leads the country next. He said elections cannot currently be held because martial law is in effect in Ukraine. Martial law was imposed after Russia launched its full-scale invasion of the country. Zelenskyy says stopping Putin is more difficult Zelenskyy said some leaders were blaming him for the continuation of the war because they could not find a way to stop Putin. He said stopping Putin was more difficult than putting pressure on others. Zelenskyy also rejected Trump’s claim that Ukrainian attacks were responsible for rising fuel prices in the US. He said the increase was due to the war in the Middle East and the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz. Zelenskyy expressed hope that the US, Europe and Ukraine would continue working together to stop Russia. He said Ukraine hoped for US assistance but would continue to defend its freedom and independence. This is a developing story.
