Madhya Pradesh on Brink of History: Brilliant IPS Pragya Richa Srivastava Emerges as Front-Runner for State’s First Woman DGP

Madhya Pradesh is poised to script a historic chapter in its policing legacy. The state may soon get its First-Ever Woman Director General of Police (DGP), and leading this historic race is one of the most brilliant, decorated and respected officers of the country — Smt. Pragya Richa Srivastava, IPS (1991 batch).

Currently serving as Director General, Home Guards and State Disaster Emergency Response Force (SDERF), Srivastava is not just an officer, she is an institution in herself. In a career spanning over three decades, she has proved that effective policing is not just about enforcing law, but about protecting lives with compassion, preparedness and vision.

A Career Defined by Firsts and Fearless Leadership:

A Master of Arts and a recipient of the President’s Police Medal for Distinguished Service and Police Medal for Meritorious Service, Pragya Richa Srivastava has served in every challenging domain — from district policing, law and order, police administration to senior leadership.

She has already created history by becoming the first woman to head Home Guards, Civil Security and Disaster Management in Madhya Pradesh. Earlier, as Special Director General, Women Safety at Police Headquarters, Bhopal, she became the voice of lakhs of women, strengthening systems for women’s security with sensitivity and firmness.

Her leadership philosophy says it all: “Preparedness saves lives, and compassionate leadership builds resilient communities.”

Under her command, Madhya Pradesh’s disaster response capability has been transformed. She professionalized Home Guards training, enhanced inter-agency coordination, improved emergency preparedness, and built community resilience — work that has saved countless lives during crises.

In a male-dominated service, she has stood tall as a beacon of inspiration. She has inspired a generation of women to wear the khaki with pride and has shown that skill, dedication and competence are gender agnostic.

Her journey is a powerful example of dedication, resilience and strategic vision. She leads not just with authority, but with empathy — a rare combination that makes her the most deserving candidate for the top post.

With incumbent DGP Kailash Makwana retiring on November 30, 2026, the state has sent 12 names to the UPSC, which will shortlist three officers in early November. The final decision rests with the state government.

But one thing is clear — if selected, Pragya Richa Srivastava will not just become the DGP, she will become HISTORY. She will be the first woman to command the entire Madhya Pradesh Police force — a moment that will redefine women empowerment in Indian policing.

Madhya Pradesh doesn’t just need a police chief, it needs a visionary leader. And in Pragya Richa Srivastava, it has the most brilliant one.
