Madhya Pradesh Poised for Historic Hat-Trick of Chief Secretary Extensions

In the corridors of Madhya Pradesh’s power, a familiar question has been circulating for weeks — will Chief Secretary Anurag Jain get an extension? His term is set to end this month, but highly placed sources in Delhi indicate that he is likely to be granted a six-month extension. If that happens, it will be a rare moment in the state’s nearly 69-year history — the first time three consecutive Chief Secretaries have received extensions.

Anurag Jain, known for his clean image and efficient working style, has consistently been in the spotlight for the right reasons. Before him, former Chief Secretaries Veera Rana and Iqbal Singh Bains also enjoyed extended tenures. Veera Rana’s extension came under the government of Dr. Mohan Yadav, while Iqbal Singh Bains received it during the tenure of former Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan.

Interestingly, Shivraj Singh Chouhan was notably generous in extending the services of Chief Secretaries. During his tenure, every Chief Secretary was either granted an extension or entrusted with a significant post after retirement, with the lone exception of Avani Vaish.

Extensions for Chief Secretaries are now becoming a common practice across the country. Recently, the Central Government granted Haryana’s Chief Secretary a one-year extension and Chhattisgarh’s Chief Secretary a three-month one. However, Uttar Pradesh broke the trend by not extending its Chief Secretary’s tenure.

In Madhya Pradesh, such extensions were once a rarity. The first was granted in 1991 and the second in 2013 — a 35-year gap followed by a 22-year wait. But the past 12 years have seen a shift, with three officials receiving extensions, all under BJP-led governments. In contrast, Congress governments preferred to offer retiring Chief Secretaries other significant positions rather than extend their terms.

For Anurag Jain, insiders believe his work during central deputation, coupled with the political goodwill in Delhi, will play a decisive role. After all, his appointment as Chief Secretary itself was seen as a last-minute move influenced by the capital. If the extension comes through, it won’t just be an administrative decision — it will mark a milestone in the political and bureaucratic history of Madhya Pradesh.
