The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) has, for the first time, released the provisional answer key for the Civil Services (Preliminary) Examination 2026. Candidates who appeared for the exam can submit representations, if any, until 6 pm on May 31, 2026, through the dedicated “Online Question Paper Representation Portal (QPRep)” available at upsconline.nic.in. Earlier, UPSC used to release the final answer keys for the Civil Services Preliminary examination only after the entire recruitment process, including the final results and interviews, was completed, often several months later. How candidates can raise objections Candidates are required to submit representations by indicating the correct answer key Candidates must submit: These submissions will be reviewed through the official evaluation mechanism before finalisation of the answer key. All representations received from candidates will be placed before teams of subject experts for a comprehensive and meticulous review. These experts, possessing domain knowledge and subject expertise, will carefully examine each representation, assess the supporting documents, and record their considered views regarding the correctness of the answer key for the concerned questions. The final answer key, however, will be released only after the declaration of the final result, in accordance with the Commission’s existing practice. The UPSC said question papers are prepared by subject-matter experts drawn from across the country to ensure fairness and balance for candidates from diverse academic and regional backgrounds. The Commission added that questions are based on credible and verifiable sources, including: It is important to note that the Civil Services (Preliminary) Examination was conducted on May 24, 2026, in two sessions: Around 5.49 lakh candidates appeared for the examination this year, out of a total of 8.19 lakh registered candidates across 2,072 exam centres located in 83 cities. The exam serves as the screening stage for recruitment into services including the Indian Administrative Service (IAS), Indian Police Service (IPS), Indian Foreign Service (IFS), and other Group A and B central services.

Push for transparency The Commission said the release of the provisional answer key reflects its commitment to transparency, fairness and integrity in the examination process, while allowing candidates to participate in a structured review mechanism.
