West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari on Friday announced that the Census 2027 exercise in the state will begin from August 1 and continue till the end of February next year. He asserted that the census process has no connection with politics and urged people across Bengal to participate in the nationwide exercise. Bengal census process to begin from August The Chief Minister made the remarks while attending a meeting at Nabanna, the state secretariat, in connection with the first phase of the ‘Census of India, 2027’. Speaking at the meeting, Adhikari said India has made significant progress in census operations and stressed that West Bengal must catch up with other states in terms of data collection and administrative preparedness. Nabanna meeting held over census preparations He also referred to alleged demographic changes in certain parts of the state, attributing them to cross-border infiltration from Bangladesh. According to him, the lack of fencing along nearly 600 kilometres of the India-Bangladesh border in West Bengal contributed to infiltration and demographic shifts in some districts. Border infiltration issue raised during meeting Adhikari claimed that the previous state government failed to hand over land required for fencing work to the Border Security Force, resulting in delays in securing the border. Highlighting the importance of the census, the Chief Minister said accurate population data is essential for governance, planning and development. He appealed to citizens to actively cooperate during the enumeration process.
