A US federal judge ruled on Monday that Maurene Comey, the daughter of former FBI Director James Comey, was unlawfully fired from her job as a federal prosecutor in New York last year. Judge Jesse M. Furman said Comey, who served as an assistant US attorney for a decade, was illegally dismissed in July 2025. He noted that she had worked on some of the nation’s highest-profile cases and had consistently received “the highest accolades from supervisors and peers alike”. Additionally, Maurene Comey, was involved with prosecutions of Jeffrey Epstein, his accomplice, Ghislaine Maxwell, and Sean “Diddy” Combs, was fired in July 2025. She later sued the Department of Justice, challenging its right to terminate her. Sex offender Epstein was a millionaire financier Jeffrey Epstein was a millionaire financier from New York. He was friends with prominent leaders and celebrities. He was accused of sexually abusing a minor girl in 2005. In 2008, he was convicted of soliciting sex from a minor. He was sentenced to 13 months in prison. In 2019, Jeffrey was arrested on sex trafficking charges. But he died by suicide in prison before the trial. His partner, Ghislaine Maxwell, was convicted in 2021 of helping him. She is serving a 20-year sentence. Comey challenged her dismissal in court After her dismissal, Comey sued the Justice Department and others, arguing that her termination violated the constitutional separation of powers, the First Amendment and the Due Process Clause of the Fifth Amendment. She claimed she was fired because she was the daughter of James Comey, a longtime opponent of President Donald Trump, or because of her perceived political affiliation and beliefs, the judge noted. Judge rejects government’s argument Furman rejected the government’s claim that Comey could be dismissed because federal prosecutors exercise the president’s “conclusive and preclusive” powers. “The Court concludes the Defendants are wrong,” the judge wrote. He said the government’s argument that Congress was barred from regulating the removal of federal prosecutors “flies in the face of nearly two centuries of Supreme Court precedent”. Furman added: “Indeed, to accept Defendants’ argument would be to unsettle the very equilibrium established by this Nation’s constitutional system.” The Justice Department did not immediately respond to an email seeking comment.
