Incidents of highway robberies have been rising along National Highway 44 (NH-44), where members of the Mewati gang reportedly tie up drivers and steal goods from containers. Over the past four years, the gang has looted more than Rs 30 crore worth of goods. Recent incident: Container looted at gunpoint On the night of September 17, four members of the Mewati gang held a container driver hostage at gunpoint in Sagar’s Gaurjhamar police jurisdiction. The container, carrying parcels worth Rs 56 lakh, mostly mobile phones and electronic items, was en route from Gurgaon to Nagpur. The driver, Deepchand (resident of Dhunima Bhoksil, Bihar), reported that his container (HR 55 AP 0049) departed from Amazon ESR Sohna Logistics Park in Rakeida, Gurgaon, on September 16 at 4 a.m. The vehicle was equipped with CCTV cameras and GPS for tracking by SK Transport, Gurgaon. Around 2 a.m. on September 17, near Silarpur village on NH-44, another container (HR 55 AK 9488) suddenly braked, forcing Deepchand to stop. Four gang members approached, tied him up, locked him inside the container box, and transferred the parcels to another vehicle before fleeing. The entire incident was recorded on the container’s CCTV cameras. Now read the story of the Mewati gang’s crime… Methodology: How the gang executes robberies The gang reportedly used a grinding cutter to cut through the container’s internal curtain, avoiding locks, and shifted 56 of 609 parcels into a second vehicle. Deepchand was abandoned, tied up with his vehicle, near Mungwani around 5 a.m. He managed to free himself and reported the incident to the Mungwani police station, who then forwarded the case to Gaurjhamar police. The gang is skilled in evading mobile GPS and CCTV surveillance. Investigations indicate links to Haryana’s Mewat, Palwal, and Nuh districts, but local police cooperation is limited, allowing suspects to escape even after their locations are traced. Mewati gang: A well-organized network The gang operates across Madhya Pradesh and other states, carefully selecting targets and planning heists. Some members infiltrate logistics or transport companies to gather inside information. In a similar August 2024 heist worth Rs 12 crore, gang member Mohammad Waris infiltrated as a security guard and helped execute the robbery. The gang uses modern firearms and sells stolen goods through black markets and e-commerce platforms, often splitting goods into parts to avoid detection. Why highways are targeted: Five key reasons A rising pattern: Fifth highway loot in Sagar The September incident marks the fifth container loot on NH-44 in the Sagar region this month. Over the past four years, highway robbers have looted over ₹30 crore worth of mobile phones and electronics, with evidence suggesting involvement of external gangs. Some stolen goods were even recovered from Nagaland, and others were sold abroad. Notable past highway robberies Police action Investigations are ongoing, with authorities trying to track the gang’s network across Haryana and Madhya Pradesh. CCTV footage, GPS data, and intelligence are being analyzed to apprehend the perpetrators.
