Global FMCG company Nestle has recalled some of its baby food products from store shelves in several European countries after “toxic elements” were supposedly found in a few items supplied by a specific distributor, Reuters reported on Tuesday. The affected food brands included SMA, BEBA and NAN, which are also sold in the Indian markets, but their formulation or ingredients could be different. According the report, Nestle has withdrawn only those products that may have contained a “toxic element” in one of the ingredients used in the manufacturing of these food items and distributed by one of the company’s suppliers in Europe. A health expert cited by Reuters said that harmful toxins in baby foods could cause vomiting, stomach ache or nausea. Affected Countries Nestle has recalled products from several European countries, including Austria, Denmark, Finland, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Switzerland, and the UK. What Nestle said Nestle said the problem came from an ingredient, supplied by one of its key suppliers, which may have contained a harmful toxin. After the incident, Nestle has began testing all affected products to find the exact source of the problem. No Confirmed Illnesses yet The FMCG major has ruled out any cases so far of babies falling sick. What should consumers do? Meanwhile, Nestle has published a list of product codes that should not be used, while ensuring there aren’t any major shortages of baby formula. Challenge for New CEO For Nestle’s newly appointed CEO, Philipp Navratil, the recall of key baby products from some of the major European markets seen as a major setback under his leadership as he seeks to rid certain management issues plaguing the company. Nestle shares fall nearly 1% On Tuesday, Nestle’s shares closed 0.72% in red at 75.88 Swiss Franc at the SIX Swiss Exchange which is Europe’s 3rd biggest stock exchange. ​
