A team of the CID on Monday once again reached the Kalighat residence of TMC MP and the party’s national general secretary, Abhishek Banerjee, in connection with the alleged signature forgery case. Banerjee seeks 15 days’ extension Banerjee had been directed to appear before investigators at Bhawani Bhavan on Monday. However, citing health issues, he sought a 15-day extension from the state detectives and informed them that he would be unable to attend the summons. Despite the request, CID officers arrived at his residence and began videographing the premises. Investigators said every aspect of the process was being documented and that no procedural lapses would be allowed during the probe. Health grounds cited for absence The case stems from alleged discrepancies found in the signatures of Trinamool Congress MLAs submitted during the election of the Leader of the Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly. Following an FIR lodged by the Assembly Secretary, the CID launched an investigation and issued notices to several legislators. As part of the probe, Banerjee was also summoned for questioning. Second notice served by investigators The notice came amid heightened political tensions. On Saturday, while travelling to Sonarpur to visit the family of a deceased party worker, Banerjee was attacked by protesters. Eggs and shoes were hurled at him, his clothes were reportedly torn, and he was physically assaulted. An object believed to be a brick was also thrown at him, though he escaped serious head injuries as he was wearing a helmet. Signature forgery case widens further Following the incident, Banerjee underwent treatment at two hospitals and is currently recuperating at home under medical supervision. Sources said he has been advised rest and is undergoing medication, including painkillers. According to CID sources, the request for additional time was submitted through his legal representatives. Soon after receiving the communication, a CID team reached the Diamond Harbour MP’s residence as part of the ongoing investigation. As of the latest reports, CID officials had been waiting outside the residence for a considerable period and had not yet entered the premises. The officers continued to remain stationed outside while the probe progressed.
