At least 25 prisoners have been killed and around 100 others injured following violent clashes between two groups of inmates at a prison in Sri Lanka, Reuters reported citing police and hospital sources. The violence erupted on Sunday at the prison in Negombo, a coastal town around 35 km (20 miles) north of Colombo, the country’s commercial capital. According to officials, the clashes involved convicted prisoners and those held in detention, with tensions escalating between rival groups inside the facility. Drug-related tensions behind unrest As per the preliminary findings the confrontation may have been triggered by a dispute between a group allegedly involved in drug trafficking activities inside the prison and another faction opposing such operations, according to The Hindu. Security forces deployed Following the outbreak of violence, Sri Lankan authorities significantly reinforced security at the prison. The Police Special Task Force (STF) and riot control units were deployed to bring the situation under control and prevent further escalation. Three inmates were subsequently transferred to the Pallansena Prison Camp on Monday as part of measures to restore order within the facility. Police sources said clearance operations were still underway in parts of the prison, with officials working to confirm the full number of dead and injured. Investigations launched Prisons Department Media Spokesman A.C. Gajanayake confirmed that a special investigation has been launched into the incident, as reported by The Hindu. He said a dedicated inquiry team had been appointed on the instructions of the Commissioner General of Prisons to conduct a comprehensive probe into the causes and circumstances of the unrest. A separate police investigation is also underway. Meanwhile, Minister of Justice, Attorney-at-Law Harshana Nanayakkara, has requested a detailed report on the clashes involving inmates at Negombo Prison.
